India has an extensive rail network covering the whole of the country. Many parts of the rail, postal and telegraph networks were mapped and developed when India was a part of the British Empire. India eventually became an independent country in 1947, but many elements of the rail, postal and telegraph systems can be traced back to the period of British rule. |
